Madeline “Maddie” Hanson is a twenty year old girl with a troubled past. She has a two and a half year old daughter, Charlotte, who is the light of her life. The father, however, is no longer in the picture — he is in prison for murder. Maddie has to lay low, terrified that he will get out of prison and find her and Charlotte. Maddie has no support system except her older neighbor, Mrs. Gladstone, whose husband passed away a year prior. Mrs. Gladstone watches Charlotte when Maddie has to work, which is frequently. Maddie works at a small diner nearby. Maddie is the image of innocence, of sweetness. She is so innocent and sweet. CEO Rafe Cameron stumbles upon the diner and Maddie after a rough day, and is immediately taken. Maddie has no idea that Rafe also has skeletons in his closet.
