After Ivar’s death and the defeat of the last great pagan resistance in England, Alfred spares Hvitserk and offers him a choice: execution, exile, or baptism and service. Hvitserk chooses baptism and is given the name Athelstan, in honor of the monk Ragnar loved. Alfred names him a Christian prince and lord of East Anglia.
