The bell rang, and Midtown School of Science and Technology erupted into its usual chaos of slamming lockers and shouted conversations. Y/n was leaning against a row of lockers, surrounded by friends, the afternoon sun cutting through the tall windows and catching the shine of their hair.

Friend 1

So, what, you're like obsessed with him now?

Friend 2

giggling She said he's cool, that's basically a marriage proposal in Y/n language.

Y/n's friend

Come on, admit it. You've got a thing for the mask.

Peter's fingers froze on the zipper of his backpack. He held his breath, waiting for the answer. A dismissive laugh. A change of subject. Anything.

Friend 1

Seriously though, you don't even know who he is. How can you like someone you've never even seen?

Y/n's friend

Maybe that's the point. It's mysterious. Like, he could be anyone. He could be standing right here in this hallway.

Peter's heart was pounding so hard he was sure someone would hear it. He risked a glance. Y/n was smiling, that easy, dismissive smile that made his stomach do a weird flip.

So? Are you gonna deny it?

The group went quiet, all eyes on Y/n. Peter felt the silence stretch out like a rubber band about to snap.
