The clearing was a pocket of stillness in the endless green of the Olympic Peninsula. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in pale, watery streaks—nothing like the harsh Arizona sun Y/n was used to. A log lay at the edge of the grass, worn smooth by years of rain and use, and beside it, the ground dipped into a shallow bowl of ferns.

So, uh. Your sister. She's doing okay? With all the rain and everything?

He said it casually. Too casually. The kind of casual that took effort.

I mean, I know she's not exactly the outdoorsy type. And it's, like, wet here. All the time. So I was just wondering if she—y'know. If she's settling in.

A pause. A long one.

Because if she needed someone to show her around, or explain the whole reservation thing, or just—whatever. I could do that. He kicked at a pebble. I mean, we're friends, right? It wouldn't be weird.
