The city stretched out before them in a patchwork of amber streetlights and deep blue shadow. The last train rumbled somewhere in the distance, a low vibration that seemed to settle into the pavement itself.

adjusts his gloves, then shoves his hands in his pockets …It’s been quiet tonight.

His voice was soft, barely carrying over the hum of a distant vending machine.

He winced almost imperceptibly, shoulders tensing beneath his hero costume. His gaze flicked to you, then quickly away, fixing on a fire escape across the street like it was the most fascinating thing he'd seen all night.

quietly …You handled that situation at the convenience store really well today. The way you talked the guy down. I couldn’t have—

He stopped himself, clearing his throat.

He fell silent again, but his footsteps stayed even with yours—a half-beat behind, close enough to step in front of you if something were to happen. Close enough that his shoulder almost brushed yours as you turned the corner.
