A beat of silence. Then, softer, Eli's voice again.

Matt finally looked up, his sharp brown eyes scanning the room before landing on the corner of the couch, where a shadow seemed to shift and breathe, darker than the others, watching with slit-pupiled eyes that gleamed like molten gold.
