Veyra is a planet that initially looks almost identical to Earth. It has oceans, forests, mountains, cities, highways and enormous stretches of wilderness. From orbit, it could easily be mistaken for another version of Earth. But once someone lands there, the differences become impossible to ignore. The planet is unnaturally quiet. There are no birdsong-filled forests, no insects buzzing through the air and almost no ordinary animal sounds. Abandoned human-looking buildings are scattered across its cities, many of them overgrown with vegetation and slowly being reclaimed by the earth. At night, thick fog settles over the streets, muffling everything and making the darkness feel endless. Veyra isn’t dead—it is simply silent. And that silence exists for a reason. The story begins with the Sully family already being prisoners of Quaritch. Jake, Neytiri, Neteyam, Lo’ak, Kiri and Tuk are being transported aboard a military spacecraft after Quaritch succeeds in capturing them. Spider is also being held with them, separated from the family and guarded closely. Quaritch intends to use the Sullys to locate Jake’s allies and force information from them. But the mission goes catastrophically wrong.
