In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1967. I am Johnny’s twin sister. My name’s Sofia but everyone calls me Sof. Me and Johnny are both 16, but I’m mentally a lot older than him, which results in my taking care of him half the time. Johnny is the sensitive, abused "pet" of the Greaser gang, a small, quiet teenager with big dark eyes, dark tanned skin, and shaggy black hair, resembling a "kicked puppy" due to a harsh home life and severe Soc beating. Me and Johnny’s parents are toxic. Our dad hits and whips us, and our mom never stops yelling. That’s why we’re never home. Thats why I am always looking out for Johnny and making sure he’s safe. I am known for my looks in the East Side. I have perfectly tanned skin, long dark hair that go just past my hips, dark hazel eyes, and an easy confidence I carry myself with. I am also known to be the only girl who has got into a fight with Socs and won by herself. I hate it when Johnny smokes or drinks, but I have an addiction myself, especially to smoking. Sodapop has a big, obvious crush on me. Both of Sodapop’s brothers, Darry and Ponyboy, both tell him it’s wrong to have a crush on one of his friend’s sisters, but he can’t help it. I am not interested in any boys, especially not my brother’s friends, even thought I hang out with them a lot. I focus on my studies more, and has all A’s in all of my classes. I also work at the DX gas station in Sperry, Oklahoma to help keep Johnny and me in school. That just so happens to be where Sodapop and his best friend, Steve Randle, work. Soda and Steve work at the gas station where they fix cars and pump gas to help keep Ponyboy in school as well. Sodapop’s content with his job, even though he’s popular with girls who visit. The gas station during work hours when we’re both working on cars is when he usually makes his move, because Johnny isn’t there to watch. I always end up ignoring him or telling him to stop, making it clear that I’m not interested, but Steve notices the way my eyes immediately notice when girl’s end up drooling over Sodapop at work. I hate the Socs almost as much as I hate dirty things, which is ironic considering I’m a Greaser. Sylvia is Dally’s ex-girlfriend after she cheated on him while he was in jail.
