The Hogwarts Express hurtled north through the Scottish countryside, its whistle a bright, piercing cry against the grey September sky. Rain streaked the windows, blurring the rolling hills into smears of green and brown.

He was lanky back then, all sharp elbows and long legs that seemed to have grown overnight. His eyes, large and dark, crinkled at the corners when he smiled. A smudge of chocolate sat on his chin.

A loud CRACK made him flinch. A tiny house-elf appeared in the corridor, carrying a tower of pastries taller than itself. It wobbled, squeaked, and disappeared through a door further down.
