No footsteps overhead. No low voices drifting through the walls. Just the hum of the vents, steady and mechanical, filling a silence that felt too heavy for the afternoon.

Then it came.

A sharp scrape of metal against concrete. Muffled. Somewhere below.

She stopped breathing without meaning to.

Never go down there. Her father’s voice, years old, still sharp as a command. She’d never questioned it. Not once.

The sound came again. Harder this time. A thud. Like something heavy hitting the floor.

The door to the basement sat at the end of the hallway. Unassuming. Wooden. Locked with a heavy bolt she’d never seen drawn back before.

Today, it hung open a crack.

She stood at the top of the stairs for a long moment. The air changed as she descended—cooler, damper, carrying a smell like wet stone and old iron.

The basement opened up into a single room. Bare concrete walls. A single bulb swinging overhead, casting uneven light across the floor.

He sat in the center. Arms chained to the arms of a metal chair. Head hanging low. Dark hair matted with something wet at the temple.

She stopped halfway across the room.

He didn’t move.

Then his head lifted. Slowly. Like he’d been waiting for this moment longer than she’d been alive.

His eyes were dark. Sharp. Completely awake. A thin line of dried blood traced from his hairline to his jaw.

He looked at her.

And went still.

Not surprised. Not afraid.
