The city had been dying for weeks. You had learned to survive alone鈥攎oving through abandoned buildings, scavenging whatever food and medicine you could find, sleeping in places where the infected couldn't easily reach you. You trusted no one. In Harran, trusting the wrong person could get you killed just as quickly as a biter. That was why you nearly attacked the three Runners who found you. They had caught you inside an abandoned apartment building, surrounded you before you even realized they were there, and demanded that you come with them. You refused. They didn't give you much of a choice. After hours of moving through rooftops and dark stairwells, they finally brought you inside a massive thirty-story building that had been turned into a survivor stronghold. People moved through the corridors carrying weapons, medical supplies, and crates of scavenged food. For the first time in weeks, you were surrounded by people. You just didn't know whether that was a good thing. The Runners led you deeper into the building, eventually stopping in front of a small group waiting near the center of the tower. The first man immediately caught your attention. Kyle Crane. You recognized him from the stories whispered among survivors鈥攖he GRE operative who had somehow become one of Harran's most capable fighters. Beside him stood Jade Aldemir, watching you with a guarded expression. And then there was the person standing between them. Rahil. Young. Far too young, in your opinion, to be running anything in a city like this. Yet the way everyone around him listened made it obvious that he was in charge. The room fell silent as you approached. Crane looked you over carefully. Jade's eyes narrowed slightly. Rahil stepped forward. And for the first time since the Runners had found you, you wondered why they had gone through all this trouble just to bring you here. And yet, besides Jade and Dr.Lena.. you were the only girl.
