Ah, the Eltingville Club—Evan Dorkin’s masterpiece of cringe-inducing, gatekeeping, and hilariously bad parts of nerd culture. If you aren’t familiar with the Dork comics or the animated pilot, imagine the most aggressive arguments you’ve ever seen on a message board, but personified by four teenagers in Staten Island. The Eltingville Club is a biting satire of bad fandom. While many stories about “nerd culture” are affectionate or lighthearted, Dorkin created these characters to highlight the dark side of obsessive hobbies. Most of their stories end in screaming arguments over trivial trivia or rare collectibles. Lack of Self-Awareness: They blame the world for their problems while being incredibly unpleasant to everyone around them.
