Mason Walker is twenty-nine. Claire is twenty-seven. They’re young, married, still figuring out life—and absolutely not prepared for how much it’s about to change. At 3:17 A.M. on August 10th, Claire wakes Mason with three words: “I’m in labor.” Their first baby is finally on the way. They have a nursery waiting, a hospital bag packed, and absolutely no idea what they’re doing. By sunrise, they’re no longer just husband and wife. They’re parents.

The Walker house sits quiet at the end of a gravel road, a single porch light burning against the dark. Cicadas hum in the trees. The air is thick and warm, carrying the smell of cut grass and honeysuckle. Nothing moves. Nothing stirs. For now, everything is still.
Inside, the bedroom is dark except for the pale glow of a digital clock on the nightstand. The ceiling fan spins slowly overhead. Clothes are draped over the armchair in the corner. Mason's boots are kicked off by the door. A glass of water sits on Claire's side, half-empty. The house is settled in a way that only happens when two people have made a home together.
Claire's eyes open.
She doesn't move at first. Just lies there, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out what pulled her from sleep. Her breathing is even. Her body is still. Everything seems normal.
Then another contraction rolls through her, low and sharp, and Claire's hand finds the sheets.
Claire Walker
sitting up slowly Oh.
She waits. Breathes through it. Counts the seconds until it passes, the way she's read about a hundred times, the way she's coached other mothers through a hundred times. It's different when it's you.
Beside her, Mason doesn't stir. One arm is thrown over his head, the blanket kicked down to his waist. He's dead to the world, the way he always is when he finally crashes.
Claire Walker
quietly Mason.
Nothing.
Claire Walker
a little louder Mason.
Still nothing. A soft snore.
Claire Walker
reaches over and shakes his shoulder Mason. Wake up.
Mason's eyes open halfway. He blinks at the ceiling, disoriented, still half-asleep.
Mason Walker
groggy What?
Claire takes a breath. She's calmer than she feels, which is a small miracle. Her voice is steady when she speaks.
Claire Walker
I think my water broke.
Mason is awake instantly. He sits up so fast he nearly tumbles off the mattress, catching himself on the nightstand.
Mason Walker
loud What?
Claire Walker
wincing I think I'm in labor.
For three full seconds, Mason just stares at her. The same man who walks into dangerous situations without flinching. Who's handled bar fights, car wrecks, domestic disputes, and more than a few people who thought they could outrun the law. None of it prepares him for this.
Mason Walker
slowly Okay.
Claire Walker
Okay?
Mason Walker
Yeah. Okay. runs a hand through his hair We knew this was coming.
Claire Walker
looks at him You look terrified.
Mason Walker
I'm not terrified.
Another contraction hits. Claire's face tightens. Her hand grips the blanket, knuckles going white.
Mason Walker
jumps out of bed Okay, maybe a little.
Claire laughs despite herself. A breathless, shaky sound that cuts through the tension like a knife.
Claire Walker
Get the hospital bag.
Mason Walker
already moving Already packed.
Claire Walker
Good.
Mason Walker
grabs keys off the nightstand Car keys.
Claire Walker
Phone?
Mason pats his pockets. Finds it.
Mason Walker
Got it.
He takes two steps toward the door. Stops. Turns back.
Mason Walker
Wait.
Claire Walker
through gritted teeth What?
Mason Walker
staring at her We're having a baby.
Claire Walker
a tired smile Yes, Mason. That's generally how labor works.
Mason Walker
laughs nervously Our baby.
Claire's expression softens. The pain fades for a moment, replaced by something bigger. Something that makes her eyes shine in the dark.
Claire Walker
Our baby.
Neither of them says anything for a long moment. The nursery down the hall is ready. Tiny clothes folded in drawers. The crib waiting. The car seat already installed in Mason's truck. All the plans, all the preparation, all the quiet fears and hopes — it's not some distant future anymore. It's happening.
Mason walks back to the bed. He takes Claire's hand carefully, like she's made of glass.
Mason Walker
Ready?
Claire Walker
shaky breath No.
Mason Walker
smiles Me neither.
Another contraction begins. Claire squeezes his hand, hard.
Claire Walker
breathing through it Okay. Now we can panic.
Mason Walker
Together?
Claire Walker
meets his eyes Together.
At 3:17 in the morning, their quiet little life shifts. Somewhere down the road, the hospital is dark and waiting. The nursery sits empty for the last time. And their daughter — their daughter is on her way.
