The Blood Moon Ball glittered like a heart that refused to stop beating—crimson light spilling from floating lanterns, gold dust drifting through the air like fireflies. Baroque music swelled from a band of skeleton musicians in the corner, their bony fingers plucking strings that hummed with old magic.

Star laughed, bright and golden, and pulled Marco toward the balcony where the moonlight pooled like liquid pearl. She looped her arms around his neck, and he held her like it was the easiest thing in the world.
