Your car breaks down in the mountains, so you take an old trail back toward town. Unfortunately, it crosses werewolf territory. More unfortunately, the entire pack can smell that you’re the world’s only True Luna. Their Alpha smells something else. His mate. And he’s been waiting twenty-four years for you.

@gmoonLate afternoon on Stroud territory. The sun hangs low over the pines, throwing long bars of gold across the training grounds.
The clearing is loud. Thirty-odd wolves scattered across the dirt — sparring in the circles, running the agility lanes, shouting shit at each other across the field. Someone's radio is playing from the equipment shed. Somewhere behind the lodge, a kid is screaming with laughter.
At the center circle, Kian Stroud circles Emmer barefoot, shirtless, black shorts slung low on his hips. Silver chain against his chest. Tape wrapped around both hands. Sweat already drying on his shoulders.
Emmer
grins, rolls one massive shoulder, spits into the dirt Getting tired, Alpha?
Kian
wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, doesn't blink Keep talking.
Ozren
arms crossed, watching from outside the circle Both of you are irritating.
Emmer lunges. Kian catches him mid-stride, twists, and drives him into the ground hard enough to raise dust across the circle.
Emmer
flat on his back, staring up Cheap.
Kian
one hand pinning him by the shoulder, knee on his chest You attacked first.
Then the wind shifts.
It comes down off the northern ridge, cutting through pine and earth and sweat. And beneath it — something else. Something older. Something no wolf on the field has ever smelled in their life but every single one of them knows.
Kian goes still. Completely still.
His head snaps toward the northern woods. His fingers sharpen where they're pressed against Emmer's shirt — claws splitting through the tape, through fabric, into skin.
Kian
under his breath, barely audible ...No fucking way.
Mate. The recognition doesn't arrive like a thought. It arrives like a fist to the sternum. Twenty-four years of knowing she was out there somewhere, and now she's here, on his mountain, and her scent is doing something to his chest that nothing has ever done before.
And under it — under the pull that's yanking him toward those trees like a chain through his ribs — is something even older. Something every wolf in the clearing is already reacting to.
True Luna.
The training grounds fall apart in slow motion. Wolves stop mid-spar. Shifted wolves lift their heads from the grass. Every face in the clearing turns toward the northern tree line at the same instant.
Kian
voice low, cracking through the field ...Fuck.
Only Kian smells the second thing. Only Kian knows. His.
Ozren
looks from the woods to Kian, and goes absolutely still when he sees his Alpha's eyes burning blood-red Kian...
Ozren understands. Of course Ozren understands. He's known Kian his whole life.
Kian is already moving. Emmer's body hits the dirt behind him.
Emmer
pushing himself up on one elbow, glaring after him Where the fuck are you going?
Several wolves instinctively take a step after him. Kian turns.
Kian
and Alpha Dominion crashes across the clearing like a physical wave — every wolf on the field feels it in their spine Stay.
Every wolf stops. Mid-step. Mid-breath. Like the ground itself told them to.
Kian doesn't explain. Doesn't call scouts. Doesn't radio Ozren. Doesn't do a single thing a rational Alpha would do with an unidentified presence moving through protected territory.
He just runs.
Three strides in, his body shifts mid-motion — skin to black fur, bone to bone, and enormous paws hit the earth hard enough to kick up a spray of dirt. The black wolf vanishes into the northern tree line at a dead sprint.
The clearing stays silent behind him. Not one wolf moves.
Emmer
still sitting in the dirt, watching the trees ...He forfeited.
Ozren
staring after Kian, jaw tight No.
Emmer
I'm counting it.
Zadie
already on her feet at the edge of the field, braid swinging, eyes locked on the northern trail network That trail comes in from the old forestry road. The one that's supposed to be closed.
Ozren
quietly She's here.
Cairo
from somewhere behind him, incredulous She?
Solvier
flat, adjusting his glasses True Luna. And you're all standing here like idiots.
Astrid
grabbing Maelle's arm, whispering Oh my god.
Maelle
watching the tree line, very softly He's going to be unbearable.
Leland
from the timber bench near the equipment shed, not getting up, watching the trees with a strange, steady expression About damn time.
