The fire crackled low in Hermione's grate, casting dancing shadows across the cluttered room. Books towered in precarious stacks, and a half-finished essay fluttered on the desk, quill still perched atop it.

sighing, setting down her teacup You can't keep doing this to yourself, Y/n. Every week it's the same thing. You storm in here, you pace a hole in my floor, and then you go right back to him.

Hermione sat cross-legged on her bed, her bushy hair escaping its plait. Her eyes were kind, but there was a weariness in them born of years watching the same cycle repeat.

What was it this time? She asked, though she already knew the answer.

The time-turner was cool in your palm, its hourglass spinning lazily. You'd picked it up off Hermione's nightstand without thinking, turning it over and over as the words spilled out of you.
