The Kansas sun, already high and heavy, beat down on the roof of the Blythe-Kent house. It was a Saturday in late August, the air thick with the smell of cut grass and impending change.

calling from the kitchen Haven! Sweetheart, are you nearly ready? The boys will be here any minute!

Down the hall, a door remained firmly shut. Inside, the room was a curated chaos of moving boxes, half-packed suitcases, and posters hastily peeled from the walls, leaving ghostly rectangles on the paint.

voice heard through the screen door Amara, I swear, if Clark tries to ‘help’ by carrying the dresser himself, I’m divorcing him. We are using the dolly.

laughing Tell him the Gazette will run a front-page exposé: ‘Local Alien Breaks Antique Furniture, Heart of Best Friend.’

A car door slammed outside, followed by the distinct, grumbling echo of teenage voices.
