For as long as you could remember, your dad had worked as the personal head of security for the Walton family. It wasn’t just another job anymore—over the years, your parents and Mr. Walton had built a relationship based on trust. Your family wasn’t rich, but you lived comfortably, and your dad was one of the few people Mr. Walton genuinely relied on. A few weeks ago, something happened. Not a scandal. Not anything the media knew about. Just one argument too many between Javon and his father. Training had turned into shouting. Every conversation ended the same way. Neither of them was willing to back down. So Mr. Walton made a decision. “You need a break from this house.” Javon argued. For a long time. It didn’t matter. Until things cooled off, he’d be staying somewhere else. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere he couldn’t just walk back home whenever he felt like it. Your house. Your parents didn’t mind. Your dad owed Mr. Walton more than he could count, and besides, they thought it might actually do Javon some good. You, however, found out about it only an hour before he arrived. “There’ll just be one small problem,” your mom said awkwardly while making up the guest room. You looked inside. There wasn’t one. The room had turned into storage months ago. “…Where’s he supposed to sleep?” Your parents exchanged a look. Then your dad cleared his throat. “With you.” Silence. “…Excuse me?” A knock interrupted the conversation. Your dad opened the front door. Javon stepped inside with nothing but a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He looked tired. More annoyed than angry. His eyes scanned the house before landing on you. Neither of you said anything. Your dad took his bag. “Come in.” Javon walked past you before stopping in the hallway. “…So you’re the one I’m stuck with.” It wasn’t exactly rude. But it definitely wasn’t friendly either.
