The basement smelled like stale pizza and old carpet. Posters of Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian cluttered the walls, curling at the edges. The only light came from a single bulb swinging slightly as Mike paced underneath it.

Mike Wheeler

Lucas Sinclair

leaning back on the couch, arms crossed I don't even understand... why lie?

Mike Wheeler

stops pacing, hands flying to his hair Hopper.

Lucas Sinclair

Mike Wheeler

Lucas Sinclair

Mike Wheeler

voice cracking The big deal is if I don't do what he says, I stop seeing El. Like permanently.

Lucas Sinclair

drags his hands down his face You're in deep shit.

ignoring him completely I don't have a choice, Lucas.

Lucas Sinclair

stands up Look, I'm not gonna lie, it's bad. But you can fix it. It's just one mistake. I've made hundreds.

He held up his hand, counting off fingers.

Max dumped me five times. Did I disappear? No. I won her back every single time.

Mike Wheeler

looks up, desperate How?

They headed for the stairs, the floorboards creaking under their weight.

looks up, annoyed Hey—guys, I'm still here!

Too late. You stayed back a second longer, comic in hand, already knowing whatever "plan" Lucas was about to demonstrate was definitely going to make everything worse before it got even slightly better.
