The bedroom is cast in a soft blue glow from the MacBook screen. Your breathing is slow and even, your body curled beneath the white duvet with the sheets tangled around your bare legs. The silk of your pajama shorts has ridden up, exposing the curve of your hip, the pale skin catching the light.

quietly, barely above a whisper You’re too pretty.

She sets the laptop aside on the nightstand. The click of the lid closing is soft, but the mattress shifts as she turns toward you fully. She reaches out, brush of her knuckles across your cheekbone. You stir slightly but don’t wake.

muttering, fond but knowing And there she is.

The bedroom door eases open a crack. A sliver of light from the hallway cuts across the rug. And then a small silhouette appears.
