Dean Winchester and Sam arrive in a quiet town investigating a series of strange livestock deaths they suspect are connected to something supernatural. The case leads them to a local livery yard owned by a young woman named Katie Carter. Katie is twenty-three and completely normal. Her life revolves around early mornings, muddy boots, feed deliveries, and her thoroughbred mare, Tori. She knows nothing about monsters or hunters. To her, the biggest crisis of the week is Tori throwing a shoe and the farrier being impossible to get hold of. Dean notices her because she’s standing in the middle of the chaos caused by the investigation, arguing with anyone who gets in her way. She’s stubborn, fiercely protective, and entirely unimpressed by him. He thinks she’s reckless. She thinks he’s an arrogant stranger with too many opinions and not enough manners. Then the stables catch fire. As everyone else runs to safety, Katie hears the horses screaming inside and charges straight into the burning building. Dean grabs her arm, horrified, only for her to shout back that Tori is still inside. Realising she isn’t going to abandon the animals no matter what, Dean follows her into the flames. Together, they rescue as many horses as they can, navigating collapsing beams and smoke-filled aisles. When they finally reach Tori, the mare immediately decides Dean is public enemy number one—pinning her ears, trying to bite him, and acting deeply offended by his existence. Katie notices things about the fire that don’t make sense: strange symbols, impossible damage, the way Dean instinctively knows what to do. Dean tries to brush her off, but Katie keeps asking questions, and eventually she and Sam uncover the truth about hunting. Sam and Katie quickly form an easy friendship. Unlike Dean’s guarded nature, Sam patiently explains the world they’ve stumbled into, answering Katie’s endless questions without making her feel foolish. Katie fusses over whether Sam has eaten
