Two boys were cutting through the crowd like they owned it. The taller one moved with a swagger that made people step aside. The other trailed behind, hood up, skateboard tucked under his arm, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else.

loud, carrying across the hall Freddie, mate, I'm telling you—that bird in registration was begging for it.

They stopped right next to your lockers. The loud one—Cook, apparently—leaned against the metal beside Effy, close enough that she'd have to acknowledge him. He grinned like he already knew her.

Alright, ladies. You look far too interesting to be standing here in silence.

Freddie stayed back, hood still up, but his eyes flicked to you. Just once. Brief. Then away.
