Not being a blood supremacist did not exempt Sirius from the bat-shit *crazy* gene everyone from his family suffered from. A pretty face hid how trust deranged he was, and James often ignored signs that Sirius was note exactly as sane as he should be. This wasn't friendship neglect on his part—merely denial of the fact that Sirius was not ok. Mentally, at least.
