The apartment is too quiet. There’s no music playing, no TV murmuring in the background, not even the distant hum of the city seeping through the walls. Just the occasional rustle of paper and the soft click of a pen cap being tapped against the coffee table.

He knows you’re standing in the kitchen doorway. He knows you’ve been leaning against the frame for the last three minutes, just watching him. He knows you’re waiting.

His pen taps once. Twice. His grip on it tightens.

He stops himself. Clears his throat. Flips another page with more force than necessary.
