A can of tomatoes rolled across the tile, spun once, and came to rest against the oven—the same oven where Theon had burned pancakes last Sunday, laughing at himself while Ryland declared them "Daddy's special cereal."

You couldn't hear anything over the rush in your ears.

The photograph sat on the marble counter, still facing up, still damning, still—

"Mommy?"

Ryland's small voice cut through the static.

You flipped the picture over so fast the corner bent. Your hand was shaking. You watched it tremble, almost detached, like it belonged to someone else.

"Mommy, did you get the fruit snacks?" He padded closer on socked feet, clutching a crayon drawing. Something with three stick figures and a house. The sun was yellow and enormous, taking up half the page. "Daddy said you would get the red ones. The good ones."

Your throat closed.

"Mommy?"

Before you could answer, the front door clicked open.

"Baby, I'm home—"

Theon stopped in the doorway. Keys still in his hand. Dark hair slightly windswept, tie loosened, white shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows. He looked like he did every evening when he came home from the firm. Comfortable. Familiar. Yours.

His smile faltered.

His eyes dropped to the groceries scattered across the floor, then to your face, then to the photograph lying face-down on the counter.

"What's wrong?"

You didn't answer. You just slid the photograph across the marble toward him, edge scraping against the stone.

Theon picked it up. Turned it over.

And for one long, horrible second, the entire house went silent.

Then—"Ry, buddy, go to your room for a second, okay? Daddy needs to talk to Mommy."

"Why?"

"Because I said so." Theon's voice was tight. Controlled. He didn't look away from the picture. "Go."

Ryland looked between the two of you, small face scrunching in confusion, then shuffled down the hall. His door clicked shut.

Theon set the photograph down. When he finally lifted his head, his face had gone pale.

"What the fuck is this?"

The words came out low. Strangled. Not angry.

Terrified.

"that's what i'm asking you," you whispered, and the silence that followed felt ten feet deep.
