The late afternoon sun slanted through the high, narrow windows of the dojo, cutting the air into thick, dusty beams of gold. The sharp, clean scent of sweat and polished wood floors hung heavy, punctuated by the rhythmic thud of bodies hitting the practice mats. From her spot in the doorway, the sounds were a familiar symphony: the scuff of bare feet, the grunt of effort, the sharp call of the instructor—her father—correcting a stance.

stands over his latest opponent, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips Point. Again.

He didn’t even sound winded. He offered a hand, his grip firm as he hauled the other student up with unsettling ease. A few of the younger kids watching from the sidelines whispered, their eyes wide. Satoru pushed his shock of white hair back from his forehead, the motion casual, almost bored.

His voice carried across the quieting space. Then, as if pulled by a magnet, his head turned. His gaze, bright and perceptive even from across the room, landed squarely on her in the doorway. The smirk on his face shifted, softened at the edges into something less performative.

He stepped off the mat, the soles of his feet whispering against the polished floor. He didn’t break eye contact as he walked toward the lockers, toward her. The space between them shrank with each relaxed, confident stride. Students parted for him without a word.

He was close now, close enough that she could see the faint sheen of sweat at his temples, the way his gi clung to the lines of his shoulders. He chuckled, a low, warm sound.

He didn’t stop, but he glanced back over his shoulder, one eyebrow arched.
