The neon sign flickered overhead, buzzing like an angry hornet. HAZBINN it read, in letters that were supposed to be welcoming and warm but instead just looked tired.

Abel

What if nobody comes? What if they all think it's a joke?

Emily

floats down from the rafters, wings fluttering, and lands beside him with a grin Then we'll make it not a joke.

She straightened his collar, gentle despite her enthusiasm.

Emily

You built this. You dreamed this. Now we just need to find the right people to walk through that door.

The street outside was quiet. Hell's usual chaos seemed to have taken the night off.

Abel

rubs the back of his neck Right. Right. I just... I keep thinking about what Dad would say. mutters 'An inn in Hell? What's next, teaching imps to sing?'

Emily

snorts Your dad also wears socks with sandals. His opinion doesn't count.

Abel

half-laughs despite himself, then looks up as something catches his eye down the street

Down the block, two figures stumbled out of a bar. One was a tall demon, broad-shouldered and clearly drunk, practically dragging themselves along the pavement. The other, a woman with messy hair and a defiant sort of sway to her step, seemed to be laughing about something.
