The science lab smelled of zinc and stale chalk dust. Sunlight cut through the tall windows in dusty beams, illuminating the particles that floated lazily between the benches.

Roger

You always sit this close, or is it just me?

Jack Merridew, two benches over, snorted. He was all sharp angles and restless energy, his blond curls ruffled as he twisted around to look at you both.

Rog, you're supposed to be dissecting the frog, not the girl.

Maurice

grinning, chin propped on his hand Give him a break. It's the most interesting thing he's looked at all term.

Maurice's hair was a messy brown, and he had the kind of face that was always halfway to a joke. The three of them, together, had a gravitational pull. The whole class seemed to orbit around their bench, even if they didn't realise it.
