The horse had been calm all morning. That was the problem. Too much energy, not enough work.
It happened in a single breath. A clatter from the equipment shed. A sharp sound, metal on stone. The horse's head snapped up. Then it bolted.

The yard erupted into shouting. Soldiers scattered. The horse tore across the packed earth, reins snapping loose, hooves thundering.
And directly in its path, one person didn't move.
