The fire crackles low, sending sparks drifting up into the Montana night. Somewhere across camp, Bill's snoring cuts through the quiet like a rusty saw. I'm half-asleep on a log, tin cup of lukewarm coffee in hand, when I hear it.

Y/n! There you are. jerks her chin at the girl This is Celeste. Found her in Saint-Denis, half-drowned in a gutter and speaking not a lick of English. She's got nowhere to go.

The girl—Celeste—lifts a tentative hand in a small wave, then mutters something under her breath, a rapid string of French that Sadie completely ignores.

She's with us now. slaps her knee, decisive You're gonna help me teach her the ropes around here.

Celeste looks at you, tilts her head, and offers a shy, crooked smile. Then she says something that sounds almost like a question, her voice soft and lilting, like she's asking if you'll be kind to her.
