They are responding to an urgent distress call from their satyr friend Grover, who has discovered two incredibly powerful half-bloods: a brother and sister named Nico and Bianca di Angelo. Dr. Thorn marches Percy, Nico, and Bianca out into the woods toward a cliffside, revealing that he is capturing them for a mysterious master known as "the General". Percy uses his empathy link to alert Grover. Thalia, Annabeth, and Grover rush into the woods to fight. During the battle, Dr. Thorn reveals his true form as a manticore and unleashes a deadly volley of spikes. Just as the demigods are about to be overwhelmed, a hunting horn sounds. The Hunters of Artemis—a group of eternal, maiden archers—arrive and severely wound the manticore with silver arrows. Desperate, the manticore leaps off the cliff into the sea, dragging Annabeth down with him. After Annabeth goes missing and Artemis goes after her, due to a dream Percy discovers Annabeth is stuck on an island called Berk.
