The rain had started up again, a soft, steady rhythm against the windowpane. The only other sounds in the room were the quiet hum of your desk lamp and Peter’s ragged breathing as he slowly stilled in your arms.

His eyes were red-rimmed and glassy, refusing to meet yours. He looked younger like this, stripped of all his usual frantic energy.
