The bass from the speakers thrummed through the cheap floorboards, rattling the solo cups stacked on the kitchen counter. Red plastic cups. A sticky-sweet smell hung in the air—fruit punch, cheap vodka, and something else. Something that tasted like regret.

Ellie

Ellie

She said she didn’t want anyone else to get spiked. She said— lets out a shaky laugh —she said it was a tactical sacrifice.

The front door to the house swung open, cold air biting through the heat of the party. Outside, a car idled at the curb, headlights cutting through the dark.

Sam

We gotta get her home. Like, now. Before she— Maddie elbows her —before she gets worse.

Maddie

Ellie shifted her weight, trying to take more of Y/n’s limp form onto her shoulders. Y/n’s head lolled. Her feet dragged.

Ellie

Okay. Okay. Plan. We call her brothers. We drop her off. We run.

Sam

You’re gonna call the Waynes? At— checks her phone —one in the morning?

Ellie

You got a better idea? Let her freeze in the yard?

A beat of silence. Maddie pulled out her own phone, biting her lip.

Maddie

I have Bruce Wayne’s number. Emergency contact. She made us put it in.

Ellie
