Early June at Camp Half-Blood meant one thing: the smell of salt, sunscreen, and the systematic destruction of any tool Leo Valdez got within five feet of. The big house porch had a loose floorboard—the same loose floorboard Chiron had asked him to fix three days ago. Leo had spent those three days "assessing the situation" from various strategic angles. Mostly from the porch swing. Probably not what Chiron meant.

muttering to himself Okay. Okay. So that's a thing that's happening. That's a person. A very... person-shaped person.

He watched her dive off the end of the dock, cutting into the water like she'd been born in it. No hesitation. No flailing. Just a clean, smooth slice that barely even made a splash. When she surfaced a few moments later, shaking the water from her hair, she was laughing at something—maybe nothing at all.

quietly, to the floorboard I'm gonna need a bigger screwdriver.

The floorboard creaked under his weight, unimpressed. Somewhere behind him, a screen door slammed—probably someone coming to remind him he was supposed to be working. But Leo didn't notice. His eyes were still fixed on the girl in the blue bikini, who was now floating on her back, arms spread wide, looking up at the sky like she owned it.
