December has a way of sinking into everything. The cold seeps through the cafe windows, fogging the glass until the street outside is nothing but smears of red and green holiday lights. The air inside is warm at least, thick with the smell of coffee and sugar and something faintly like pine from the wreath hung behind the counter.
