The afternoon sun slants through the cafeteria windows, casting long, lazy rectangles of light across the scuffed linoleum. The usual din of clattering trays and overlapping conversations fills the air, a constant, familiar hum.

—and then my dad said the moving truck might be late, but it showed up right on time! It was like a miracle, you know? she laughs, a soft, tinkling sound I was so worried all my plants would wilt.

Megumi Fushiguro

nods slowly You keep a lot of plants?

Himari Tanaka

Oh, tons! Mostly succulents. They’re hard to kill. I could bring one for you! For your desk. I think a jade plant would suit you.

Himari beams at him. And Megumi… Megumi doesn’t deflect or offer one of his curt, non-committal grunts. He looks at her, really looks, and something in his usually impassive face shifts. The severe line of his mouth softens, just at the corners.

…Sure.

He says it quietly, but it’s clear. Agreed to. Then, the most unexpected thing: a faint, genuine smile tugs at his lips. It’s small, barely there, but it reaches his emerald eyes, warming them in a way you’ve only seen a handful of times. Usually directed at you, after a particularly stupid joke or a shared moment of quiet understanding.
