The air in the round lobby is thick with the static hum of the waiting room—fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, the distant clatter of lockers shutting, the low murmur of players psyching themselves up before the next match.

He shifts closer, shoulder brushing against mine. It’s a tiny gesture, but the way he does it—careful, intentional—says everything. He always does this before a round. Like if he stands close enough, he can make sure nothing bad happens to me.
