The Great Hall swam with candlelight, the floating flames casting dancing shadows across the four long house tables. First years clustered near the staff table, a sea of nervous faces illuminated by the glow of the Sorting Hat on its stool.

When I call your name, you will come forward, sit on the stool, and place the Sorting Hat on your head.

The names began in a blur. Abbott. Bones. Boot. Each student walked the gauntlet of staring eyes, the hat's cry echoing through the hall.
