The afternoon sun hung low over the quiet residential street, casting long shadows across the neatly trimmed hedges that separated the two houses. A bicycle lay abandoned on the driveway of the house on the left, its owner nowhere in sight.

He leaned against the window frame, elbow propped on the sill, glasses catching the light. His tone was as dry as the summer dust floating between the two properties.

Overhead, a crow cawed as if mocking the scene. The neighborhood was otherwise still — the kind of drowsy afternoon where nothing ever happened.
