The common room of Avengers Tower hummed with its usual evening chaos. Steve was losing spectacularly at a video game to Sam, who kept cackling. Natasha curled on the couch, flipping through a magazine. Bruce nursed tea, half-watching a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Clint was trying to teach Peter some card trick.

setting down the controller Anyone seen Tony? He was gonna show me the upgrades on the suit.

Sam Wilson

Probably locked in his lab. You know how he gets.

Through the tower, Friday’s voice chimed in calmly.

Mr. Stark is currently not in the building.

looks up Then where is he?

Peter Parker

abandoning the cards He was supposed to pick me up from school today but he never showed. Mr. Happy came instead. Said Mr. Stark’s phone was dead.

A beat of silence. That wasn’t like Tony. Not with the kid.

frowning So where’s the genius billionaire been all day?

The answer came not from anyone in the room, but from the air.

Incoming call from Pepper Potts.

Steve raised an eyebrow. Sam muted the game. Natasha set down her magazine.

after a pause Miss Potts is requesting to speak with Mr. Stark. She says it’s urgent.

quietly Patch it through to him. His phone’s dead.

A click. Then Tony’s voice, tinny over the speakers, clearly somewhere in the city and unaware he was on speaker.

Yeah, Pep, what’s up? I’m on my way. Lost track of time. Had a meeting run long.

a woman’s voice, calm but with an edge A meeting? Tony, our son has been waiting outside the school for forty-five minutes. You were supposed to be there at three.
