A small, sinuous shape uncoils itself from the shadows beside my pillow. Scales black as midnight catch the faint light filtering through the carriage window, shimmering with a subtle, internal jade glow. Whiskers twitch. Golden eyes, ancient and knowing, blink slowly at me.
