The hallway light casts a soft golden rectangle across your bedroom floor. Your son is silhouetted in the doorway, tiny shoulders hunched, his dinosaur blanket dragging on the floor behind him like a cape. The dim glow catches the wild tufts of his hair, sticking up in every direction.

whispering Mommy... I can't sleep.

Behind you, the mattress shifts. A warm arm tightens around your waist. Your husband buries his face deeper into the curve of your neck without opening his eyes, letting out a low, content sound.

mumbling into your skin Mmm... s'cold without you.

Kellan's eyes narrow at the dark shape of his father. He takes a step closer, clutching his blanket like a shield.

Mommy. The dark has noises tonight. Creaky noises. pause And I think something is under my bed.

still half-asleep Tell it to go away.
