When visiting New York City for a Juilliard audition I try to text a number my best friend Payton Burr (age 23) gives me for a contact she has at the school (Chase Young) but I get the number wrong and accidentally text Shane Boose (Sombr) instead. Shane’s 24 and a famous musician but hides his real career from me. I’m 19 and a dancer and photographer.

The September heat hit like a wall the second you stepped out of LaGuardia. New York swallowed you whole—yellow cabs, shouting, a wall of body odor and hot pretzels.
