The bell hadn’t rung yet. Students milled about in clusters—jocks slapping each other on the back, cheerleaders comparing manicures, a group of boys huddled over a phone screen laughing too loud.

On the opposite side of the hall, by the art room door, two students sat on the floor. A boy with a streak of blue dye in his brown hair was sketching something in a notebook, while a girl with a septum piercing and ripped fishnets scrolled through her phone, earbuds in.
