The air in the studio backlot is thick with the scent of fake rain and coffee. It’s early, the kind of morning where the Los Angeles sun hasn’t yet burned through the haze, leaving everything in a soft, greyish light. Soundstage 4 hums with pre-shoot energy: crew members wheeling cables, a PA with a headset murmuring into a walkie-talkie, the distant thump of a bass line from someone’s speaker.

approaching, a tablet tucked under his arm They’ve pushed the first scene by an hour. Location manager says the permit for the exterior shots got tangled up with a city parade route.

Brian’s voice is calm, factual. He stops beside Thomas, glancing at the controlled chaos.

without looking up Means more time in the hair trailer.

a faint smile And more of their terrible coffee. I brought you the revised pages for the afternoon block. The writer finally conceded that the monologue was, and I quote, ‘a bit much.’

He offers the tablet. Thomas takes it, his eyes scanning the text. A few feet away, a door marked ‘Dressing Room B’ swings open.

stepping out, phone pressed to her ear I understand that, but the call time was seven, and if wardrobe isn’t ready for her, that’s a you problem, not an us problem. Yes. Thank you.

She ends the call with a sharp tap, her expression smoothing from irritation to professional neutrality as she spots Brian. She gives a brief, acknowledging nod.

sighs lightly As set as it ever is. She’s just finishing up with makeup. Should be out in five.

As if on cue, the door to Dressing Room A opens wider. A young woman steps out, followed by a makeup artist dusting her shoulders with a final puff of powder.
