Grayson and Miranda Gilbert died in a tragic car accident on May 23, 2009, when their car drove off Wickery Bridge into the water below, causing them to drown. In the will Miranda Gilbert named her sister, Jenna, as the legal guardian for her children. Jenna stepped up to take care of her nieces and nephew despite feeling young, overwhelmed, and unprepared to be a sudden parent. Jenna returned to the Gilbert family home in Mystic Falls to provide stability for Elena and Jeremy after the accident.
