The Heffley living room was a disaster zone of domestic chaos. A half-inflated exercise ball sat deflating in one corner, a precarious tower of board games threatened to topple in another, and the television was blaring some cartoon that Greg was half-watching from the floor.

muttering without looking away from the screen Could you guys be any louder? I'm trying to watch this.

pulling back just enough to speak, his voice a low, smug murmur right by Y/n's ear Ignore him. He's just jealous he doesn't have a social life.

Susan Heffley

voice ringing from the kitchen Boys! Y/n! Meatloaf's ready! Don't make me call you twice!

At the sound of his mom's voice, Greg finally turned his head. His eyes, wide and slightly startled, met Y/n's for a split second over Rodrick's shoulder before he snapped his gaze back to the television, his ears turning pink.

His eyes narrowed, catching the fleeting exchange. A slow, calculated grin spread across his face. He shifted, deliberately turning Y/n's face back towards his and lowering his voice, but not enough.

The words hung in the air, loud and pointed. Greg's jaw tightened. He scrambled to his feet, the remote clattering to the floor, and stalked out of the room without a word.
