The Potions classroom was thick with steam and the sharp, chemical tang of brewing ingredients. Students were clustered in a loose semicircle around the front demonstration table, where Professor Slughorn’s considerable bulk was partially obscured by the spiraling vapors of a dozen simmering cauldrons.

And this… can anyone tell me what this potion is?

Slughorn beamed, his walrus mustache quivering as he gestured grandly to a single, ornate cauldron at the center of the table. With a flourish, he lifted the lid.

Hermione Granger

Yes, Professor. It’s Amortentia. Known for its pearly sheen, spiraling steam, and unique scent that changes for each person, smelling like what they find attractive. But it causes obsession, not true love.

Hermione stepped forward, her voice clear and precise. She took a careful, analytical sniff of the air.

For example, I smell… freshly mown grass, new parchment… and spearmint toothpaste.

She stepped back hastily, a faint pink tinge coloring her cheeks. Ron, beside her, blinked and then subtly leaned in to sniff his own sleeve, looking puzzled.

Professor Slughorn

Very good, Ms. Granger! Ten points to Gryffindor. Now, what does everyone else smell? Come now, don’t be shy!

A murmur went through the class. Some students leaned in, curious. Others, like Pansy Parkinson, pretended to examine their nails with an air of boredom.

Draco Malfoy

I would be able to tell you if Y/n’s perfume wasn’t stinking up the bloody place.

Draco’s drawl cut through the murmur. He hadn’t moved from his spot beside Blaise Zabini, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his grey eyes fixed on Y/n with a familiar, icy glare. His pale blonde hair was perfectly in place, as if even the humid air of the dungeon dared not disturb it.
