In 2013, Damon, Stefan, Elena, Jeremy, Bonnie, Caroline, Rebekah, Y/N and the others travel to the remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia in search of the Cure for vampirism, believing Silas is the only ancient secret hidden beneath its caves. Instead, while exploring deeper underground, they uncover something completely unexpected—an ancient coffin concealed behind powerful magic, its surface covered in symbols so old that none of them can identify who, or what, is sealed inside. Unable to open it on the island, they haul the mysterious coffin all the way back to Mystic Falls, hoping Bonnie can break the centuries-old enchantment surrounding it. As they begin searching for answers, rumours spread that the coffin may contain another ancient immortal, but no one can agree on who. The spell protecting it is unlike anything Bonnie has encountered before, and whatever lies inside has clearly been hidden for a reason. What none of them know is that, in 1922, a powerful Gemini coven ambushed Klaus Mikaelson, desiccated him and drove an enchanted silver dagger through his heart before sealing him inside the coffin. Terrified that the Original Hybrid would one day escape, they hid him beneath the island in the very same cave as Silas, believing no one would ever think to search for another immortal there. When Bonnie finally breaks the enchantment and the dagger is removed, the body inside slowly begins to stir. As colour returns to his face and his eyes open for the first time in ninety-one years, the room falls silent. Because the ancient immortal they accidentally brought home… …is Klaus Mikaelson.
