The elevator doors slid shut with a soft, expensive hiss, sealing you inside a cabin of brushed steel and warm, indirect light.
No muzak. No flickering fluorescent buzz. Just the faint hum of machinery and the smell of fresh carpet beneath your shoes.
The floor counter climbed. 24. 25. 26.
Beside you, the assistant rode with impeccable posture, tablet clutched to her chest like a shield. Blonde bun, silver-rimmed glasses, blazer sharp enough to cut glass.

The counter hit 48. The cabin slowed, then stopped with a whisper of hydraulics. The doors parted.
The office stretched wide and blindingly bright— floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides, downtown laid out like a model city far below. A slab of white marble served as the desk. Behind it, a leather chair faced the windows, its occupant unseen.
The room held only two other things. A single oat-colored filing cabinet. And a glass case along the far wall full of watches, each lit like a museum piece.
Marissa

And the eyes. Cold, unhurried, scanning you top to bottom the way a buyer appraises merchandise. Even before they reached your face, something in your stomach dropped.
Then they did reach your face.
He went very still.
